Why do mobile bars have a minimum spend?
Its super rare to find a bar company that doesn't operate a "minimum spend"
Many bar companies insist on a minimum spend to protect themselves from the customer hiring a bar just because of the novelty, the nice to have or because they think in their mind that the event needs it.
We all as operators of mobile bars will be able to recount in the beginning of their journey the feeling of failure or disappointment because they failed to insist on a minimum and now face the awful fact that they not only will they not make any money but in fact its cost them money to provide a bar to the customer (and often we are too polite to mention as its your big day!)
Minimum spend is for our protection and a bar for the customer to understand our minimum costs which would leave us enough to cover our costs, stock, time and staff. Its not greed assure me!
All Bar companies are super afraid of allowing you to supply ANY drinks (other than from the bar) at your event WHY? Well because of the above. Allowing drink to flow freely from a personal supply would only lead to people not buying from the bar. No bar sales could mean a loss for the bar.
The other forgotten reason is the Licensing Law. The law gives the holder of such licence to refuse anyone they think is drunk, aggressive, UNDER AGE, fallen asleep, conducting drinking games or abusive. The only real way a licence holder can see how much has been consumed by the guest is to have provided those drinks at the bar. As our duty of care to you we have to cease drinks for that guest and feel assured that the guest doesn't have access to alcohol within the area of licence.
This doesn't mean that we don't want you to enjoy your event or stop you completely from lets say getting the fizz for the speech, we just want you the customer to understand the Law, impact and potential cost to you whilst keeping your event fun.

Speak to your bar and be transparent!
Be honest when booking your bar how you want the day to go and work with them to make the vision a reality. This might mean some concessions around table wines or fizz, but i speak personally I'm always happy to discuss all options and in all cases find a middle ground!
Your event might only be a few hours but......
There is a lot more work that goes in to provide a bar for your event, picking up supply's from multiple locations, cleaning, organising, transporting, setting up, paying staff, dismantling the bar, cleaning, storing and getting ready for the next one! Your event might only be for a few hours but we spend at least triplle the time getting ready for you!
Don't be put off by any minimum spend!
Remember the spend is there to protect you and us from hiring a bar that isn't necessarily needed. If you're uber confident that your guests will achieve the minimum then there's nothing to be concerned about, all bar companies offer a refunded deposit system which we all stand by.
